Retention in School

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems involve among the four minority , three Hispanics and one black , and three boys and one girl . The research question is , Is retention in school is caused by race , gender , Age , and teacher factors . Specifically it will answer the following questions : 1 . Why are almost twice as many minority students as majority students

retained in grade in certain states

2 . Why are more boys retained than girls

3 . Thus , girls may show less discrimination against a retained peer than would

boys

4 . Are retained Children , rejected or are targets of discrimination

The hypothesis is that students who are minority would have higher probability to be retained in school than those students who are majority . Four students from National University were selected to participate in this study . Three of those students are Latinos , and one is African American . There are three boys and one girl . These students will be tested on their classroom . Their grades will be compiled , and will be use for computation . For the statistical analysis of data , the researcher will utilize finding the mean of the groups , which will inform the researcher of the average performance of the group on a measure of the variable . The researcher will also find the standard deviation , which will indicate the spread of the scores around the mean For inferential statistics the ANCOVA will be used to determine if the two groups are significantly different from one another

Introduction

There is an ongoing trust for the government over change in education to improve the academic performance of American children , This can be reckoned in the legislation for No child left behind Act . It was envisioned that by the year 2014 The fullness of its implementation will be realized , and that student retention will be eradicated . However , the fact still remains rampant retention among school children not only here in America but thru out the world . The purpose of these study is investigate the following questions (1 ) Why are almost twice as many minority students as majority students retained (2 ) Why are more boys retained than girls (3 ) Thus , girls may show less discrimination against a retained peer than would boys (4 ) Are retained children rejected or are targets of discrimination ?
