Development of new space vehicles for future space tourism

Introduction

Space travel history

The earliest space flights resulted in a competition between the United States and Russia . The then Soviet Union first launched Sputnik I and Sputnik II in 1957 (Starchild 2006 . The United States unsuccessfully tried to follow suit with the launch of the Vanguard that same year , but in 1958 , their efforts proved fruitful , and they were able to send it out in to space . In 1961 came the first milestone in space travel history involving humans when Russian [banner_entry_middle]

cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man to venture beyond the earth . In that year , the Americans were challenged . The United States sent Alan Shepard on the first manned American spacecraft to orbit the earth . In 1965 , the first space-walk ‘ was undertaken by Russian cosmonaut Leonoy , followed by American astronaut White . Three years later , the United States completed efforts that beat the Soviet Union ‘s progress in space exploration by sending Neil Armstrong to the moon (Thinkquest 2006 Since then , the rest of the world realized that mankind traveling to outer space was a reality and not just a fantasy created by Jules Verne ‘s great imagination . Many more space missions followed , some were successful , while others were disastrous and fatal

The earliest space flights were made possible because of rocket technology which were first used by the ancient Chinese . Bellis (2006 said that the evolution of the rocket has made it an indispensable tool in the exploration of space . These explosive devices started out as small weapons , but later on they were developed in to larger rockets Centuries from the creation of the first rocket , there were four people who were central to the development of modern rocket technology Konstantin Tsiolkovsky of Russia , Robbert Goddard of the United States and Hermann Oberth and Wernher von Braun of Germany . Early rockets are described as having single engines which made them rise until the fuel ran out (Bellis 2006 . With advances in technology and design , rockets were created to have several stages to enhance their speed and altitude Multi-stage rockets are a very important step in the evolution of rockets because that is how they are made today

The race for manned space flights is over , but now , there has been a growing interest in commercial space travel . The idea of space extends beyond exploration and scientific research and in to commerce and tourism . More and more people would like to venture outside the earth and see the rest of the universe , much like they do when they travel to other countries . With the advances in modern technology , sooner or later , taking a sight seeing tour of the solar system will be as common as riding the elevator
