The original creators have certain rights with respect to their works , which can be of two types namely , economic rights and moral rights . The various economic rights includes right to reproduce the work in any form (including electronic means , right to public performance , broadcast or communication of the work , right to make or issue copies to the public , right to translate or adapt the work , and any other act in relation to the work . The various moral rights of the original author includes paternity rights (right to claim ownership over the work , integrity rights (right to protect reputation and respect , general rights (right to prevent false attribution of the work ) and right to privacy (to protect privacy of certain works (WIPO . 2007 . Any individual who exercises the rights of the owner without the permission /license /assignment of the owner would be infringing or violating the copyright

For a work to gain copyright status it has to be original and capable of fixation on a tangible medium . Only the expressions of an idea and not the idea itself are given copyright protection . The various works that are protected under copyright includes literary work , dramatic work , musical work , artistic work , architectural work , work of craftsmanship , cinematographic films , broadcasts , databases , fine arts works belonging to an organization , computer programs , pantomimes choreographic works , graphics , pictorial work , sculptures , multimedia works , lectures , sound recordings , photographs , compilations , derivative works , books , periodicals , journals , manuscripts , recitations , etc (US Copyright Office 2006 . The term of projection is usually given for the life of the author plus 60 years (may vary from type of work and jurisdiction

Copyright is automatically obtained once the work is created , and registration is optional . However , the original authors may register the work in the copyright office to ensure that they obtain a copyright status . Registration does permit easy recognition and differentiating the titles of the work . It also serves as first evidence in court during copyright infringement trials (WIPO . 2007

Works that cannot be copyright protected include works not fixed on a tangible medium (such as producing designs with smoke in the air during cigarette smoking , short titles , short phrases , slogans , familiar symbols , objects or designs , lettering , coloration , ideas , techniques processes , principles… [banner_entry_footer]
