and the Portuguese lies in the fact these were all foreign forces on the soil of the Americas and their cultures were distinctly alien to the native inhabitants . The British , French , Spanish and the Portuguese all wanted to extend their imperial arm over the Atlantic Ocean with superior military ability and organized campaign systems and their main aim was to accumulate the natural and economic resources from the Americas (Lamb , 2004 , 192

But the difference in approach was significantly dissimilar . While the Spanish and the Portuguese solely saw the Americas as a pipeline of wealth for their respective kings back in Europe the advance of the British and the French were quite poles apart . For the British and the French the New World appeared to be a new opportunity to colonize and spread in population keeping in mind a goal which is practically long termed . The British and the French colonials looked upon the New World as a new home and a venue of a long termed settlement plan . For the British and the French colonials , though they eradicated the Amerindians to a large extent , the Americas developed as a new venue of power source both in the forms of military and economic forms (Berkowitz , 1993 , 239
