China has one of the fastest growing economy in the world . During the period of 1990-2001 , China recorded an average rate of 10 percent economic growth per year . In 2002 , China ‘s gross domestic product (GDP grew 8 percent in 2002 and 9 .1 percent in 2003 . All these despite a sluggish world economy and the problems associated with SARS (CountryWatch ,2006 ,p . 52 . Although the economy of China grew , serious imbalances could be noted . In particular , China ‘s ecology is unable to support rapid urbanization and industrialization . The serious repercussions of unsustainable resource utilization have resulted in the continued depletion of the limited renewable resources . The availability of water is one of the challenges that China has to address . Potable water is scarce in China and supply gaps in the urban centers were found to be
