The Differences in the Brain Chemistry of those Afflicted with Post Traumatic Stress Dis
The purpose of this is to review the available literature in regards to the brain chemistry of persons suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Dis (PTSD ) and the healthy brain
Over the past two decades there have been some breakthrough studies that have shown biochemical differences between people who suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Dis and those who have suffered similar circumstances but never develop the problem . but then the problem was called Shell Shock ‘ seeming to stem form the experience of being shelled especially on the beaches of Normandy . Today , we mostly deal with the experiences of Vietnam veterans who are dealing with the same symptoms of hypervigilance , exaggerated startle response , general irritability impulsivity , aggression , intrusive memories , depressed mood and the tendency toward suicide . They are not alone in their misery unfortunately victims of rape , physical abuse especially as children victims of car accidents and others who have experience with severe trauma also have these symptoms while others with the same or similar circumstances do not . For many of these patients it has come as a matter of some relief to know that there is a difference for them in the way their brain processes the chemicals related to trauma and because of extensive research there are now more effective ways to treat Post Traumatic Stress Dis (PTSD
The Central Nervous System
The brain and nervous system in the human body is very complex and most of what we know about how it works comes from vast amounts of research done on animals . Chimpanzees , monkeys , cats , dogs and rats have all been used to study how the system is electrically and chemically functioning . It is because of these studies and experiments that important biochemical components of the brain and autonomic nervous system can now be understood and many debilitating diseases treated The brain and nervous system operate by a series of electrochemical reactions which communicate through the body at places called synapse where one nerve ends and another begins . The electrical conductivity of a nerve is based on how the chemicals in and at the ends of that nerve respond to a stimulus at a receiving site called a receptor . The manner in which the nerves communicate with each other through the body and in the brain is mainly in the form of nerve action potentials , called simply nerve impulsies . These can be of two forms chemical and electrical at the point in which the nerves meet or the synapse ‘ The Impluses may be blocked in its transmission from one neuron to the next may be changed from a single impulse into repetitive impulses or may be integrated with impulses from other neurons to cause highy intricate patterns of impulses in successive neurons .
