The city and capital of France , Paris , came to be on of the most modernistic cities in the world as the result of a immense amount redisigning by a man called Baron Georges Eugene Haussmann . Paris was prevalent of locations of entertainment including cafes , bars , cabarets , operas , and places of dance . A great amoung of the poorer areas in the inner city and in the slums were also redesigned as well , where there were wider and more open streets and more modern looking buildings . This also meant that there were a lot of the people of the lower class were being moved out of the city , therefore , many people of the wealthy and middle class were replaced in the inner city of Paris . Even though there was a lot glamour and allurement of the many forms of entertainment in the city consequently , there was also a darker side to the city , which consisted in a prevalence in crime , poverty , and prostitution . Manet captures the essence and the characteristics of what was going on at that period of time in his painting . He uses certain distinguishing features to emphasis his poing of view such as the positioning of the woman and the significance of the mirror , the still-life objects that are on top of the bar , and the reflection of the background where the environment seems to be crowded with people “The Bar at the Folies-Bergere ” is Manet ‘s is one of the most perplexing works of art in history . The painting creates a representation of a view of an ambiguous dubious space which contains two different perceptions . One that is a concrete perception and the other one is abstract . The clash of these controversial counterbalanced elements creates a complex visual experience . Here , Manet has created a representation of a painting which at the first glance seems to be a perfectly clear and logical representation , however , when being further analyzed , it is indeed far from being logical at all .
