p New York City is the most densely populated city in North America with more than eight million residents within 321 square miles . And with the inclusion of what is known as greater New York , that being the surrounding areas of Brooklyn , The Bronx , Manhattan , Queens and Staten Island , the population exceeds fifteen million residents . As far as population , ethnic diversity and historical impact , no other city in North America can rival the achievements of New York City . Those are the reasons why I chose New York City

contained within 321 square miles of the most expensive real estate in the world . It is the financial capital of the country with the New York Stock Exchange and the famous Wall Street residing there . When speaking about the size and population of New York , it is important to differentiate between New York City and what is referred to as The Greater New York area . In 1898 , New York City annexed five neighborhoods and overnight , the city was the largest in the world . The five additional neighborhoods add an extra seven million people to the population of New York and contribute to the social , financial and historical impact of New York City . From 2000 to 2005 , New York city saw an increase of population of 232 ,000 people

The history of New York is an interesting one . The city was first established by the Dutch in 1624 . The main objective of the Dutch was different in the fact that their prime reason for first establishing the city , which at the time was called New Amsterdam , was to turn a profit on the natural resources that New York and its harbor provided . A great deal of the fighting during the Revolutionary War took place in New York as well as the bloodiest riot in American history : the New York City Draft Riots of 1863 . New York City was also the home of the first skyscrapers in the world . One of the most famous skyscrapers in the world is The Empire State building which was completed in May of 1931 which was just fourteen months after work started on the building . Even though there has since been built taller buildings , will ever measure up to that achievement of architectural skill and design

Not only is New York City unique for its buildings but also its parks and neighborhoods . Central Park , which is 820 acres right in the middle of Manhattan , is also a notable achievement . The park was designed by Frederick Law Omstead . It was started right before The Civil War and was completed once the war was over . It was made for the working class of the city as a way to escape their mostly horrendous working and living conditions and to serve as a much needed respite for… [banner_entry_footer]
